Rarely has a movie opening night sounded more like a mission statement. The film festival South By Southwest in Austin begins tonight with the world premiere of Kick-Ass, the story of a young hero, a mysterious vigilante murderer and his little daughter. Based on the comic by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., Kick-Ass is directed by Matthew Vaughn (also responsible for Layercake) and starring Aaron Johnson (last seen in Nowhere Boy), Nicolas Cage and Chloe Moretz.

Organizers are no doubt hoping that the noisy antics of the film that set the tone for the event as a whole. In front of the curtain-raising, the mood was cautiously optimistic about the records - a guide to principles for assistance in general - 25% reported in 2009. This year 134 festival presents features, including 64 world premieres. There are also 125 shorts on offer.

Potential hot entrees include Saturday Night Live-inspired comedy and action MacGruber Americans: The Story of Bill Hicks, a documentary about the U.S. comic evening. Robert Duvall and Bill Murray star in the comedy funeral Get Low, while the brothers Duplass return with exit mumblecore Cyrus. Quentin Tarantino, Ed Norton, James Franco and Robert Rodriguez were among those invited to attend.

The 17th edition of South By Southwest Film Festival runs 12-20 March.
